My internet is buggered from storm barra still not fixed so apologies for no communication I take it from odm that the lay went down never mind onwards and upwards although I won’t be able to do anything until the net is up and running again you can only report a problem with the internet online go figure how you do that? Also it’s then two working days before they respond the laugh is that you can’t talk to anyone unless you want to buy something then it’s a different story so I’ll be back soon

Just looking at a back and lay prices
To back the odds are 6.4
    To lay it's 8.6
Does any one know why there is such a price difference ?

There's a massive 2 point difference do the( here's the confusing bit ) backers or layers think it will win or lose ?this is a favourite when you say no money on the market do you think that it's a race that is very poor quality
By the way I am absolutely not invested in this race just interested in the massive difference

I don't know what race you're looking at but Jombo has hit the nail on the head. Until the market "matures", people are going to put up random prices and are obviously going to offer you a lower backing price than they think is value and the layers are going to offer you a higher price to lay than they think is value. What then happens is the gap closes as other people come in and "beat" the offer that's currently on the table so by the time the race is off, there will be normally be very little gap between the back and lay price.

If you look at outsiders, the gap can sometimes be a hundred points as people who are confident that a nag is not going to win, try to decide just how much they want to risk on the unlikely occurring (which we know it does)

Good luck with that mate but it's not a race I would be choosing to lay in personally. The trouble with Novice races is that the winners often come from the first couple in the market which means that, in reality, you only really have one horse running for you and that's the second fav. In a slightly more open handicap, you might have one in mind that you think is a likely winner to beat your lay but you'll also have a few with a realistic chance of doing you a favour . I'll see if I can find and example for today

    Thanks odm
Still very new to this I can't even remember what race it was but looking at the other horses in the race the gap was much closer ,and I'm always looking for anomalies in the market ,it never was a prospect for me ,although there is sometimes a free bet to be had I believe (never done it myself) but I'm sure QC has mentioned this in the past. Of course I could just be having another " moment"

I can't find an example for today but just for discussion's sake, these are the current prices on oddschecker for your race today

    Mr Fred Rogers 11/10
    Neils Well 6/4
    Mythical Hero 11/2
    Quaker Island 16/1
    Highland Sting 15/1

To me (and this is purely my opinion and I'm happy for others to shoot me down) the problems with laying in this race are.

The prices suggest you only have one horse running for you
The race is a Novice race which are more often won by the fav than handicap races and similar
The race is a hurdle race -ideally, I would choose a chase race as you then have the added prospect of the fences working in your favour (although I understand that can cut either way, even a 1/2 fav can make a hash of one obstacle and end its race)

I know that, if you're the kind of bloke who wants an interest most days (as I am) you aren't going to want to wait for perfect conditions but those are the kind of things I'd be looking at.

I will say one massive thing in your favour though, the fav has been ridden by three good jocks so far and is ridden today by a claimer (and I confess I have no idea how good they are). In any event, I'll be cheering you on so good luck

picking random favourites to lose is not as easy as it looks. Fridge you need to make sure you are laying at the right price. you should really keep a record of the price you lay at and the betfair sp price. if you are constantly laying at bigger than betfair sp the likelihood is that you will lose in the long run.
